There are quite a few places outside of Kuching that are off the radar. Here are two that I visited in February of this year.
~Siniawan~ a vintage town
We drove there one very hot afternoon and when we arrived, the town was really dead, except for a few cats sleeping in the sun and one or two elderly residents fanning themselves under the shade. However, it was a great photo opportunity for me without the crowds.
The town comes to life in the evening every Friday and Saturday for folks wanting to escape the city life over the weekend.
There are only two rows of wooden shops, but in the evenings you will find stalls selling handmade stuff, food (Chinese, Malays and Natives), and all kinds of sweets.
Driving there can be spooky especially at night as there are no street lighting, leading you the feeling that you are going to head to nirvana, which is the following destination, not far from Siniawan.
~Nirvana Memorial Park~
The park nestled in a serene, peaceful valley with a small chapel and a buddhist temple. Their services come complete with full arrangement for a funeral and for the price that you choose, it covers for the upkeep.
