Balut - Half hatched duck eggs

A street vendor selling "Balut", half hatched duck eggs to customers on a street in Cambodia.  Eaten by Vietnamese, Cambodians, Filipinos and Chinese, the eggs are eaten when the embryos are between 16-20 days old. To eat, the customer would tap the broad end with a spoon, remove the shell, break the membrane and sip the liquid. Then use the spoon to scoop up the solids and season with salt and pepper. Rather than standing closely and watching the customer eat, which is rude, hence this shot. (Cambodia, 2010)

  1. I cringe at the thought of slurping raw 'regular' egg...let alone this kind.
